Your garage = a scrapbooking paradise

Scrapbooking Workshop Garage

Just because something was designed with a particular use in mind, doesn’t mean it cannot evolve over time into something with endless uses. Take, for example, the garage. Traditionally used as somewhere to park your car, work on your car or do DIY, recent years have seen garage transformations for endless purposes. Gyms, libraries, kids’ play areas, dog play areas, games rooms, offices…

There is really no end of things you can do to your garage. So, if you’ve been trying to find the perfect space to do your scrapbooking, look no further.

If your garage looks anything like mine – a messy, concrete cube with peeling paint – you’re going to want to spend a bit of time sprucing it up. But don’t worry, it won’t cost you a lot of money to get your garage looking nice, just follow these handy tips.

1. Set up nice lighting

You need good lighting to work, otherwise you’ll end up with a headache and/or bad colour combinations. Ensure you have adequate overhead and workspace lighting, and also make sure that there isn’t too much light coming in through those garage windows, you might have to install a blind.

2. Invest in a great chair

Like lighting, a great chair is an essential part of any workspace. Make sure you get something that swivels, is adjustable and that’s on wheels and your back, neck and shoulders will thank you!

3. Make sure you have enough storage

Scrapbooking is one of those hobbies that requires a lot of different things, so you need to make sure you’ve got enough space to tidily store everything. You want to be able to identify what you need at first glance, so install shelving or place things in well-labeled boxes or crates. You could even install pegboards to hold things within easy reach, just look on Pinterest for inspiration.

4. Get a big enough work surface

Again, you use a lot of different things when you’re scrapbooking so you need to make sure the table you’re working on is big enough, 3-ft2 should do the trick. Also, opt for something with a smooth surface that you can easily wipe down. And to maximize space, try to minimize the number of things you have out on the table at once.

5. Evaluate the electrics

You probably use a lot of different tools and devices when you’re scrapbooking, so you need to make sure you have a sufficient amount of well-placed electrical outlets. You should always avoid connecting too many different devices to extension cords, you don’t want to overload the socket! And whatever you do, do not run an extension cord under a rug unless it is grounded. If you do need more outlets installing, hire a professional electrician.

6. Heating and ventilation

If you use a lot of aerosol products you need to make sure the space is properly ventilated. Depending on which and how many products you use, you might get away with simply opening a window. Another very important factor to consider is the heating and insulation. If you want to be comfortable while scrapbooking, you must ensure your garage is well-insulated, and if you live somewhere with a cold climate, you’ll probably also need to install heating for year-round use.

7. Flooring

Finally, you have to think about the flooring. This point is all about your comfort, it’s not essential, but if you’d be happier spending time somewhere with a large shag rug, then put one in there, if you’re happy with a concrete floor, leave it and paint it!

This is by no means an exhaustive list of all the different things you could do, but it’s a start. Go with your first ideas and then let them develop and evolve, just like decorating any other room!

While you’re at it, don’t forget your garage door!

It might not be at the top of your list while you’re decorating your garage, but a new, well-insulated garage door could make your scrapbooking space feel so much more comfortable.
