What to ask your garage door dealer before you buy

Client With Dealer

You know that you need a new garage door, and you have already started your online research to get a better idea of just what type of door might be right for your needs. However, you are still unsure of what questions you should ask the dealers located in your area.

This is understandable, as most people do not have to buy many garage doors in their lifetime. Fortunately, we’ve provided you with some questions that you can ask the dealer, so you can be sure you are working with the right company.

Get the basics

First of all, learn about the company’s basic information. How long have they been in business? Do they have the necessary licenses, insurance and permits? Can you meet them in person at their showroom, office or warehouse? (This is important! Legitimate garage door companies will always have a physical address).

Will they provide information for further research?

Good companies will usually have a list of references. They are people who have hired the company in the past and have agreed to answer questions from prospective customers. The best companies may even offer a reference list before you ask. You should make the effort to contact at least one person from this list.

Ideally, the dealer will have already installed doors in your area. If they have, you can go see the work in person. If they have not, then they should provide photos of their work.

They should also give you information about the garage door brand(s) that they use, and should respond to questions about where to find information about these brands.

What do they ask YOU?

You can also measure a company’s competence by seeing what they ask you. They should take the time to learn your requirements for the project, your budget and the design of your house (so that they can match the door’s style).

They should also be candid about the need to balance all the elements that you need: the functionality of the door, its strength, insulation and durability, color, style, design and windows.

Good companies have tools to help you with the design process. For example, they have a design center that will allow you to upload a photo of your house and then superimpose your chosen door style on it so that you can get a virtual preview of the door.

Finally, the company should give you more than one option, and they should give you different price points to choose from.

You can ask the company a number of more-technical questions. You can read this article to learn more about these details.

Do they provide guarantees?

The company should be quick to provide information in writing on warranties. This includes warranties for the door itself, for the opener, and for the installation labor. They should also provide a maintenance guide for the door and opener. You can ask to see these documents before you sign up for a door. Ask if anything is not included in the warranty.
