Clean Out and Organize the Garage With a Garage Sale

If Your Garage is Out of Control with Stored Items, a Garage Sale Might Be the Perfect Solution

If you are like most people, you have a garage that is a bit overstuffed with items that you probably no longer need. They are making it difficult to get around the garage and might even find that you are having issues when it comes to finding items that you do need from the garage because it is disorganized. It is time that you finally did something about it and got things in order. A fantastic way to do this is by setting up a garage sale.

As the weather starts to get warmer and more and more people are out on the weekends, it is the perfect time to set up a garage sale. You can get rid of many of the objects that you no longer need or have space for, and you can organize your garage. Of course, you might need some pointers on just what you need to do in order to have a successful garage sale. That’s where this article is going to help!

Should you be throwing a garage sale?

One of the first questions that you need to ask yourself is if you really have time to organize and have a garage sale. These types of sales can be quite a bit of work, and for some people, it might simply be easier for them to give away items to charity that they no longer need.

However, if you are willing to put in the time and the energy, garage sales can be a fantastic option. They are a nice way to make a little extra money and clean out your garage all at the same time, which is great. Before you get started, though, you need to have a good plan.

Preparation

The very first thing that you are going to need to do is make sure that it is legal to have a garage sale in your area, and that you do not need a permit to have one. In addition, there are some places where you can only have garage sales on certain days of the week.

You will also want to make sure that you go through the garage at least a few weeks in advance – longer if you have the time. You will want to separate your belongings into those that are no longer any good and that you will need to throw away and those that you want to try to sell at the garage sale. You will also want to have a pile for items that you want to keep, and you need to make sure that these piles or lists do not get mixed up.

If you find that you do not have enough items to have a big enough garage sale, you might want to speak with some neighbors and friends to see whether they might want to go in with you and sell some of their own items. When the sale is bigger, it can get more people to stop by.

You will also want to start thinking about the day or days that you will have the garage sale. It is a good idea to make sure that you are not having the sale on a holiday, as it means you are likely to get fewer visitors. In addition, you should check the long range forecast to make sure that it does not look like rain is in the future, as this can put a damper on your garage sale plans.

Advertise the Garage Sale

Naturally, you want to make sure that plenty of people are coming to your garage sale, and that means you need to get the word out about the sale. In the past, it was enough to just set up shop and rely on people passing by, but that’s not the case today. You will want to let your friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers know about the sale, and you will want to advertise it online through social media and free sites.

Additionally, you should make sure that you put up plenty of brightly colors signs in the neighborhood to let people know where they can find the sale and when it will be held. You can put these up a day or two before you are having the sale. Since you will want to have the sale on the weekend, this typically means putting them out sometime on Friday.

When The Garage Sale Is a Few Days Away

You want to make sure that your garage sale setup is going to be as easy to peruse as possible, so it makes sense to start arranging all of your items by their category or theme. For example, the electronics should go together, and so should the toys. Make sure that everything you are selling has been washed, especially the clothes, toys, and dishes. You will also want to price all of your items at this time. It is important that you make sure you have realistic prices on the items if you hope to sell them. People are not going to pay retail for old and used items.

It is also a good idea to have some plastic bags, such as grocery bags, on hand for those who make purchases. This will allow them to put the things they buy right into the bags and make them easier to carry away with them. When you put the items out for sale, try to arrange them in a manner that is aesthetically pleasing, as well. It does not have to be perfect, but it should look nice, as should your driveway.

The Day of the Garage Sale

On the day of the sale, you will want to check out the signs that you put up the day before to make sure that they are still in place. Have some extras with you just in case they are not. Make sure that you tie some brightly colored balloons on the outside of your driveway to show people that they have arrived. It is also very important that you have plenty of coins and small bills so you can make change. In fact, you will want to have more than you think you will need, just in case.

After the Sale

Once you have finished with the sale and the day is at an end, it is not quite time to celebrate and rest quite yet. You are still going to want to make sure that you take the time to clean up all of the items and bring the ones that did not sell inside. This is true even if you are having another sale the following day. Clean up, remove signs if it is the last day of your garage sale, and then consider whether you might want to donate some of the items that did not sell.
